Last Thursday, we swapped schedules for stories and KPIs for cold pints. In a private room in Mayfair, we welcomed Facilities Managers from across the retail sector for an evening of honest conversation, good company, and zero PowerPoint. No formalities. No sales pitch. Just a much-needed space for connection.
Real Talk in Real Time: Bringing Facilities Managers Together Over a Pint
Behind every polished storefront, perfectly timed repair, and immaculately run operation is a Facilities Manager. Yet, for a role that keeps so much running smoothly, it’s surprisingly rare that FMs have the chance to step away and connect with one another—especially across brands.
That’s why we created something a little different.
No Agenda. No Slides. Just Real Conversation.
Last Thursday evening, Distinct hosted an informal gathering for Facilities Managers in the heart of Mayfair. Held in a private room of a local pub, the setup was simple: great drinks, good food, and even better company.
There was no formal agenda—just a room full of people who “get it.” People who spend their days managing the unglamorous but essential—leaks, lighting failures, last-minute refurb requests—and do it all with precision, professionalism, and a lot of unseen effort.
Over the course of the evening, conversations naturally flowed—from the quirks of heritage buildings to the joys (and headaches) of contractor coordination. For many, it was the first time meeting someone in a similar role outside of their own brand. That connection? Invaluable.
Why It Matters
Facilities Management can often feel like a solitary role—solving problems behind the scenes, under pressure, and without pause. Creating space to talk openly, share frustrations, and swap tips isn’t just refreshing—it’s essential.
Because when FMs come together, great ideas get shared. Common challenges suddenly feel a little less isolating. And even a pint can turn into a powerful moment of peer support.
At Distinct, we’re big believers in community. Whether we’re delivering luxury retail cleaning or volunteering with The Felix Project, our work is about people. And events like this one remind us that shared experience is a powerful thing.
This Is Just the Start
The response to the evening was overwhelmingly positive—so much so that we’re already planning the next one. But there’s just one thing missing: a name.
This little FM get-together needs an identity. Something that captures the spirit of the night: candid, communal, and completely unfiltered. Have an idea? We’d love to hear it—drop your suggestions in the comments or message the team directly.
And if you fancy joining us next time, let us know. Whether you’re managing one boutique or an entire estate, there’s a seat for you at the table (and likely a drink in your hand too).
